TGS 2006
The Tokyo Game Show approaches! I went to this show last year. Sadly I can’t make it this year but it should be fun (and cheap! Only 1000 yen) so anyone who can make it to Chiba’s Makuhari Messe this coming September 22-24 (Friday the 22nd is a press-only day, Saturday and Sunday are open to the public).
For people lucky enough to go this year, note that you won’t be let in if you are dressed up in cosplay. You must get inside the venue first before you can get changed. I’m not quite sure why they do this. Surely, with cosplayers in Harajuku and Akihabara nearly every day and every weekend for sure, Tokyo-ites are used to seeing people dress up? I think they do it just to get the 500 yen fee for use of the changing rooms.
Another hint: Bring good shoes. There are not many places that you’ll be allowed to sit down and you will need all day to look at all the displays thoroughly, especially if you plan to play demos of the games.
There’s also not much in the way of food and drink besides vending machines, and maybe one kiosk that has to handle the thousands of attendees. Bring snacks with you.
And bring a camera with spare batteries and memory! There’ll be plenty of cosplayers, boothbabes/boys and stalls that you’ll want to take snaps of.
Lastly, make sure you can carry lots of loot. You’ll be handed flyers and promo items left, right and centre. Either stick it all in one of the showbags you’ll be given, or bring along someoneto carry it all for you while you run around trying out the upcoming game releases.

I went to TGS last year and will be hitting it again this year. If anyone else who reads this stuff is going it would be great to meet someone else there. I’m heading to Tokyo for two weeks on Monday. This year should be rather interesting. PS3, Wii and Xbox 360 are in the shadows this year. The main plot of this show seems to be over 100 mobile games and near 200 PC games. Mostly bargin bin Japanese stuff. I don’t know what to expect this year but the cosplay was awesome last year. I will be taking HD footage of the event and posting a non-HD version on youtube. I would post HD if I could. Anyone have 3 gigs of webspace?
Another hint on the food. If you’ve been to a convention, you know how bad food is. Well it’s worse here. Horrid looking meals and nowhere to sit. I’ll take footage of the near 300 Japanese people sitting on the floor eating. That was a sight. Just for info for those going. There is a good fast food spot next to the train station there. The food places fill up quick after the show ends. I’m talking thousands of people leaving at once all going to eat.
I expect there will be more swag this year than last. Last year was light on swag, mostly catalogues.
