OK, now this is even weirder. In my last post, I said that 46% of people surveyed by Famitsu were not happy with the upcoming release of Dragon Quest IX. But the same magazine published a survey of what people thought would be the top 10 hit gaming products in 2007 and that very game made #2.
The awesome website Insert Credit has translated a survey in Famitsu that seems to show that hardcore gamers are not happy about the upcoming release of Dragon Quest IX on the Nintendo DS.
This is weird. Dragon Quest is like Final Fantasy in popularity in Japan - in fact, despite it being Square Enix’s second most successful title after Final Fantasy, it is considered vastly more popular in Japan than the FF series. The last game, Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King sold 4.1 million copies worldwide. There’s anynumberoftoys and a few spin-offgames.
It’s hard to understand why Japanese gamers (at least, 46% of them) aren’t happy about the release on DS. Is it because of the handheld’s graphics? RPGs are the games that seem to work best on the DS.
On the other hand, this is just the opinion of hardcore gamers. And we all know that the DS’s success can be attributed to those sections of the community who were never really classified as gamers, such as the elderly (thanks to the Brain Training games) and young women (thanks to games like Nintendogs).
Personally, I’m excited about the release of Dragon Quest IX. Every game should be ported to the DS, in my opinion, hehehe.
